Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek have given the Czech Republic its first Davis Cup title in the country’s modern history, beating Spain 3-2 in the final.

Each spent about 10 grueling hours on court, playing the opening singles, teaming up for the doubles and then completing the reverse singles.

But still it was Stepanek who was cheered as a hero by more than 14,500 noisy fans at the O2 Arena in Prague.

The 33-year-old upset Nicolas Almagro in the final reverse singles to give the Czech Republic the deciding win – 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.

The 37th-ranked was the outsider against his 11th-ranked opponent. But he stuck to his attacking game on the fast indoor carpet, winning 41 points at the net and clinching the title.

Stepanek dropped to the court in disbelief before teammates Tomas Berdych, Lukas Rosol, Ivo Minar and captain Jaroslav Navratil jumped on him.

The Czechs' only other Davis Cup victory came in 1980 as Czechoslovakia, which split in 1993.

Ivan Lendl and Co. reacted the same way when Czechoslovakia defeated Italy 4-1 in the 1980 final.

“They've been our inspiration, our idols. They're the legends and now we're joining them,”
 Stepanek said.

By winning the Davis Cup the Czechs also completed a rare double just two weeks after the women secured the Fed Cup title. No country has won both competitions in the same year since the United States in 1990.
