Cristiano Ronaldo scores first-ever own goal

Real Madrid star player Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first-ever own goal during a match against relegation-threatened Granada.

Ronaldo is renowned for making all sorts of goals from any angle – this season alone he scored 21 times in the Spanish league, more than Granada’s total of 19. But on Saturday, as the match entered its 22nd minute, the shocker came – Ronaldo mistakenly headed a corner into his team’s goal.

The blunder resulted in an embarrassing 1-0 loss for Madrid, as the team did not manage to overpower Granada in the remaining time. The loss further threatens Real Madrid’s already-weak standing in the Spanish league.

Real Madrid had scored nine goals in their last two league games, but experts said the team was drained after barely managing a recent 1-1 tie with Barcelona on Wednesday in the first leg of the King’s Cup.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho was already pessimistic before Christmas about winning the league. With this latest mishap, Barcelona could increase its lead over Madrid by 18 points if they win their match against Valencia on Sunday.

I didn't like the first half from the team, it was terrible,” Mourinho was quoted as saying. “We improved after the break and we dominated. We had a chance to score but if we had taken it then the performance still wouldn't have been sufficient.”
