Finally growing: Google+ adds users at Facebook speed

It looks like the dark days are over for Google’s social network Google+ launched last year and until recently remaining a relatively unsuccessful project. Google analysts say Google+ is growing just like Facebook did when it was the same size.

The company said that it has 135 million active users. In September Google+ reached 100 million users and since then the network has attracted 35 million more active users, Wired reports.

“Today Google+ is the fastest-growing network thingy ever. More than 500 million people have upgraded, 235 million are active across Google (+1'ing apps in Google Play, hanging out in Gmail, connecting with friends in Search…), and 135 million are active in just the stream,” the statement published on the Google blog reads.

Every month Google+ is adding about 14 million so-called stream-active users, most similar to the users of Facebook. The speed of the network’s growth is similar to Facebook’s path when it was the same size back in 2008. The giant reached 1 billion users in October. In the fall of 2008 it reached 100 million users and 200 million six months later adding 14.3 million users per month.

The user growth data was made public along with some new features including “Google+ Communities” and enhancements to Google’s mobile photo app Snapseed, the company reported on its official blog.
