Bosnian police arrested on Tuesday an Egyptian citizen considered a threat to national security and detained him ahead of extradition to his home country, the security ministry said.

Ahmed Mohamed Elfarahati Othman, who had temporary residence in Bosnia, would be extradited in the “coming days” to Egypt, the ministry said in a statement quoted by Fena news agency.

He would be banned from entering Bosnia in the next five years, it added.

“The arrest was based on the activities of the Intelligence and Security agency (OSA) which declared this Egyptian national a threat to national security of Bosnia,” the statement said without giving further details.

During the 1992-1995 war between Croats, Muslims and Serbs in Bosnia, a large number of volunteers from Islamic nations flocked to the former Yugoslav republic to take up arms.

Many of them stayed on after the conflict and obtained Bosnian citizenship.

Under international pressure, local authorities established in 2006 a government commission to probe conditions under which at least 1,500 people had obtained citizenship during and after the war.
